Cold process soap making is a deeply fulfilling creative craft. However, working with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH / Lye) requires strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent caustic chemical burns.

Mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Before opening your container of sodium hydroxide, gear up properly:

• Splash-Proof Safety Goggles: Protect eyes against splashes. Standard prescription glasses are NOT sufficient!
• Chemical-Resistant Gloves: Nitrile or long-cuff latex gloves to safeguard hands and forearms.
• Respirator Mask (FFP2/N95): Essential during dissolving to prevent inhaling hot, irritating lye fumes.
• Full Coverage Clothing: Long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and closed-toe shoes.

1. The Golden Rule: Lye into Water!

Never pour water onto dry lye. Doing so causes sudden boiling and violent chemical eruption.

2. Container Compatibility

Lye solution reacts aggressively with certain materials. Use only:

• Heat-resistant borosilicate glass (Pyrex)
• Polypropylene plastic (recycling code PP 5)
• High-grade Stainless Steel (304 or 316)

Never use aluminum, cast iron, copper, or Teflon. Lye reacts with aluminum to release flammable hydrogen gas!

3. Ventilation

Dissolving lye heats liquid to over 80°C (175°F) within seconds. Open windows or work under an exhaust hood.

Emergency Response

• Skin Contact: Flush instantly with cold running water for at least 15 minutes. Household white vinegar can be applied after flushing to neutralize basic residue.

• Eye Contact: Flush immediately with saline solution or lukewarm water for 15 minutes without rubbing, and seek emergency medical aid immediately.
